The first trial I covered for the Cortland Standard involved a gruesome murder in a small town about 15 miles west of Cortland. The two-week trial involved a bizarre set of characters, a poorly planned, poorly executed drug smuggling scheme and senseless violence.

As an afternoon paper, we were able to scoop the other three surrounding morning papers. I would call in the details of that morning’s court proceedings over a cell phone before deadline at 11:30 a.m.
